What Is Trauma and How Does It Affect You?

Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply distressing or life-threatening event that overwhelms your ability to cope. It can result from a single incident such as an accident, assault, natural disaster, or from ongoing experiences like childhood neglect, domestic violence, or combat. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that without treatment, trauma-related conditions like PTSD can affect your mental and physical health for years.

When we experience trauma, our brain and body can get "stuck" in survival mode. This can show up as flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting, or being easily triggered by reminders of the trauma.

At Anew Path, we understand that healing from trauma requires patience, safety, and specialized approaches. We meet you where you are and never push you faster than you're ready to go.

What Types of Trauma Does Anew Path Treat?

Childhood abuse or neglect
Sexual assault or abuse

Loss of a loved one (especially sudden or violent)

How Does Trauma Therapy Work?

We use evidence-based trauma therapies that are proven to help people heal:

  • Trauma-Focused CBT: Addresses unhelpful thoughts and behaviors that developed after trauma
  • Somatic Approaches: Work with the body, including yoga classes, to release trauma stored in the nervous system
  • Parts Work / IFS: Help integrate different parts of yourself affected by trauma
  • Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques: Build capacity to stay present and regulate your nervous system

What Does the Trauma Healing Process Look Like?

Trauma therapy follows a three-phase approach widely supported by clinical research. First, we build safety and develop coping skills to manage distressing symptoms. Only when you feel stable enough do we begin to process the traumatic memories themselves using evidence-based methods like EMDR or somatic experiencing. Finally, we focus on reconnecting with life, relationships, and meaning.

Healing from trauma is not about forgetting what happened; it's about being able to remember without being overwhelmed. It's about no longer having the past hijack the present. It's possible to move from surviving to truly living again.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy

What is trauma-informed therapy?

Trauma-informed therapy is an approach that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and integrates that understanding into every aspect of treatment. At Anew Path, your therapist creates a safe, supportive environment and uses techniques specifically designed to help you process traumatic experiences at your own pace.

How does EMDR therapy work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) uses guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation while you recall traumatic memories. This process helps your brain reprocess the memory so it becomes less distressing. Most clients experience significant relief within 6 to 12 EMDR sessions.

How long does trauma therapy take?

The duration depends on the nature and complexity of the trauma. Single-incident trauma may resolve in 8 to 16 sessions, while complex or developmental trauma often benefits from longer-term treatment. Your therapist will work at a pace that feels safe for you.

What types of trauma do you treat?

We treat all forms of trauma, including childhood abuse and neglect, sexual assault, domestic violence, accidents, combat and military trauma, medical trauma, grief-related trauma, and complex PTSD from prolonged difficult experiences.

Is it normal to feel worse before feeling better in trauma therapy?

It is common to experience some temporary emotional discomfort as you begin processing traumatic memories. This is a normal part of healing. Your therapist will prepare you for this possibility and equip you with coping strategies to manage difficult moments between sessions.
