Individual therapy session - a client in a comfortable, supportive environment with their therapist

What Is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy is a one-on-one therapeutic relationship between you and a licensed therapist. Sessions typically last 50 to 60 minutes and provide a confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is the most common form of mental health treatment and is effective for a wide range of concerns.

At Anew Path, we believe that everyone's journey is unique. Our therapists take the time to understand your personal history, current challenges, and goals for the future. Together, we develop a customized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and supports lasting change.

Whether you're dealing with a specific issue or simply seeking personal growth and self-understanding, individual therapy provides the tools and support you need to create meaningful transformation in your life.

How Do You Know If You Need Individual Therapy?

Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm
Difficulty coping with life changes or transitions
Strained relationships or communication challenges
Past trauma affecting your daily life
Unhealthy coping mechanisms or behaviors
Desire for personal growth and self-discovery

What Happens in Individual Therapy Sessions?

Our therapists are trained in multiple evidence-based modalities, allowing us to tailor our approach to your unique needs. We may draw from:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors
  • Mindfulness-Based Approaches: Cultivating present-moment awareness and acceptance, complemented by our meditation & mindfulness programs
  • Psychodynamic Therapy: Exploring how past experiences influence current patterns
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: Building on your strengths to create positive change
  • Trauma-Informed Care: Providing safety and support for healing from difficult experiences

What Can You Expect from Your First Session?

Your first session will focus on getting to know you, your history, current concerns, and what you hope to achieve through therapy. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and ensure you feel comfortable with your therapist.

Sessions typically last 50-60 minutes and occur weekly, though frequency can be adjusted based on your needs. Progress looks different for everyone, and we'll regularly check in to ensure therapy is meeting your goals.

Everything shared in therapy is confidential, creating a safe space for you to be completely honest and open. Our goal is to help you develop the insights and skills needed to thrive, not just in therapy, but in every area of your life.

Frequently Asked Questions About Individual Therapy

What happens in a first therapy session?

Your first session at Anew Path is an intake appointment where your therapist gets to know you, your history, and your goals. You'll discuss what brings you to therapy, answer some background questions, and begin building a relationship with your therapist. There is no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with.

How often should I go to therapy?

Most clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum and establish a strong therapeutic relationship. As you progress, sessions may shift to biweekly or monthly. Your therapist will recommend a frequency based on your needs and goals.

How do I choose the right therapist?

The most important factor is the therapeutic relationship. Ysou should feel safe, heard, and respected. At Anew Path, we offer a brief consultation to help match you with a therapist whose style and specialties align with your needs.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed in therapy is confidential and protected by law. The only exceptions are situations involving imminent danger to yourself or others, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. Your therapist will explain these limits during your first session.

Do you offer sliding scale or reduced fees?

Anew Path accepts BCBS PPO, Aetna, and Optum insurance. We also offer self-pay rates. Please contact us to discuss payment options and find a solution that works for your budget.
