Addiction & Substance Use Therapy
Recovery is possible. Whether you're taking the first step or continuing your journey, our compassionate therapists provide the support you need to build a life free from addiction.
What Is Addiction and How Does It Develop?
Addiction is a chronic but treatable condition characterized by compulsive substance use or behavior despite harmful consequences. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), it develops through a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors, and fundamentally changes the brain's reward system. Professional therapy addresses the underlying causes and equips you with tools for lasting recovery.
We believe recovery looks different for everyone. Our therapists work collaboratively with you to understand your unique situation, identify the underlying factors driving your substance use, and develop a personalized treatment plan that supports your goals.
Whether you're seeking help for alcohol use, drug dependence, prescription medication misuse, or behavioral addictions, we're here to support you without judgment. Recovery is a journey, and we're honored to walk alongside you.
What Are the Signs of a Substance Use Problem?
How Does Addiction Therapy Work?
We use proven, evidence-based approaches tailored to your specific needs and goals:
- • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Identify triggers and develop healthy coping strategies
- • Motivational Interviewing: Strengthen your own motivation and commitment to change
- • Trauma-Informed Care: Address underlying trauma that may be driving substance use
- • Relapse Prevention: Build skills to maintain recovery long-term
- • Mindfulness-Based Approaches: Develop awareness and healthier responses to cravings
- • Family Involvement: When appropriate, involve loved ones through family therapy to support the healing process
What Does Recovery Look Like?
You don't need to have "hit rock bottom" to seek help. We work with people at all stages, from those who are questioning their relationship with substances to those in active recovery needing ongoing support.
Our therapy can complement other treatment programs, support groups, 12-step meetings, or serve as your primary support. We coordinate care as needed and always respect your autonomy in determining what recovery means for you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Addiction Therapy
Do I need to be sober to start therapy?
No. You do not need to be sober or have already quit to begin therapy. Many people start therapy while still actively using substances. Your therapist will meet you where you are and work with you at whatever stage of readiness you're in.
What's the difference between therapy and rehab?
Rehab (residential or intensive outpatient programs) provides structured, immersive treatment for severe addiction. Outpatient therapy at Anew Path offers ongoing support through regular sessions. It can be a step after rehab, an alternative for less severe cases, or a long-term component of your recovery plan.
Do you treat behavioral addictions?
Yes. In addition to substance use disorders, we work with clients struggling with behavioral addictions such as gambling, internet or gaming addiction, and compulsive behaviors. The therapeutic approaches are similar and focus on understanding triggers and building healthier patterns.
How does family therapy help with addiction?
Addiction affects the entire family system. Family therapy helps repair trust, improve communication, establish healthy boundaries, and create a home environment that supports recovery. We often recommend combining individual and family sessions.
Is addiction therapy confidential?
Yes. All therapy at Anew Path is strictly confidential and protected by federal and state law, including 42 CFR Part 2 which provides additional privacy protections for substance use treatment records. Your therapist will explain confidentiality limits during your first session.
