Somatic Therapy
A body-centered approach to healing that helps you release stored tension, regulate your nervous system, and reconnect with the wisdom of your body. Experience gentle, guided techniques in a safe and supportive environment.
What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic Therapy is a body-based approach that recognizes the deep connection between physical sensations and emotional well-being. The word "somatic" comes from the Greek soma, meaning "body." This practice works with the understanding that our bodies store experiences—especially stress and trauma—in the form of tension, holding patterns, and nervous system dysregulation.
Rather than relying solely on talk-based processing, somatic therapy invites you to tune into your body's signals: areas of tension, places of numbness, the rhythm of your breath, and the subtle cues your nervous system provides. Through gentle awareness, guided movement, and breathwork, your body can begin to release what it has been holding.
Somatic Therapy is not a massage or physical manipulation. It is a guided process that honors your body's own pace and wisdom, helping you move from states of chronic stress or shutdown toward greater regulation, presence, and embodiment.
What Are the Benefits of Somatic Therapy?
What Happens During a Session?
A Somatic Therapy session begins with a brief check-in where you'll share how you're feeling physically and emotionally. Your practitioner will guide you into a state of relaxed awareness, often starting with breathwork or a body scan.
From there, you may be guided through gentle movements, breath patterns, or simple awareness exercises designed to help your nervous system shift out of fight-flight-freeze patterns. The practitioner may use light touch (always with your consent) to help you notice and release areas of tension.
Sessions are 60 minutes long and are done fully clothed. The pace is always guided by what feels safe and manageable for you. Many people experience a deep sense of calm, relief, or emotional release during or after a session.
How Can Somatic Therapy Support Mental Health?
Research increasingly shows that trauma and chronic stress live not just in our thoughts, but in our bodies. When the nervous system gets stuck in survival mode, it can manifest as anxiety, hypervigilance, dissociation, chronic tension, or emotional numbness. Traditional talk therapy addresses the cognitive dimension, but somatic work addresses what's happening below the level of conscious thought.
Somatic Therapy helps complete the body's natural stress response cycle, allowing your nervous system to return to a state of safety and regulation. For many people—especially those healing from trauma—this body-based approach provides a missing piece that accelerates and deepens the healing process.

Frequently Asked Questions About Somatic Therapy
Do I need to undress for somatic therapy?
No. Somatic Therapy sessions are done fully clothed. You'll be guided through gentle movements, breathwork, and body awareness exercises while lying on a comfortable table or seated in a chair.
How many somatic therapy sessions do I need?
Many people notice shifts after a single session, but a series of 4 to 8 sessions is typically recommended for lasting change, especially when working with trauma or chronic stress patterns. Your practitioner will create a plan based on your individual goals.
Can somatic therapy be combined with talk therapy?
Absolutely. Somatic Therapy is an excellent complement to traditional psychotherapy. Many clients at Anew Path combine somatic work with their therapy sessions to address both the cognitive and physical dimensions of healing.
Is somatic therapy the same as Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is one specific modality within the broader field of somatic therapies. Our Somatic Therapy sessions draw from multiple body-based approaches including SE, breathwork, gentle movement, and nervous system regulation techniques to create a personalized healing experience.
